Beginner

This class is designed for those who don’t know any Spanish or took Spanish a long time ago and don’t remember much. This is a 30-hours class that meets once/week for 2 hours. During this class you will learn the basics and acquire some learning tools that will greatly assist in your learning and make it easier and faster to learn Spanish as you move to intermediate 1, 2, and higher.  If you’ve never taken a language class before, don’t worry – we will walk you through the basics. You will learn some new ways to quickly add words and verbs to your vocabulary, how to conjugate in the present tense, how to speak in the future tense, and you will get the foundation to further your Spanish skills.

After you acquired some basic knowledge you will also be  learn the present progressive and the past progressive, introduction to the verb “to be” (ser and estar), the weather, emotions, physical descriptions, and the verb gustar. You will have the opportunity to  practice conversation with other students at the same level.  You will also be introduced to the basics of speaking in the preterite (past tense).  During this class we usually hear things like:  “I wish someone had taught me this when I was in High School! “I never thought of it that way.”  “Wow!  that is pretty cool.”  “Muy interesante.”

Intermediate 1

This class is designed for those who already took our Beginner 30-hour session (see explanation above) or those who already know that information. This is a 30-hours class that meets once/week for 2 hours. During this class you will have the opportunity to participate in conversations and activities to reinforce all knowledge acquired in the previous session. You will advance in your knowledge and practice with the verbs ser and estar, present tense, future tense, present progressive and past progressive.

You will then learn about  irregular verbs, 12 irregular verbs that you must master, learn about  reflexive verbs (present and preterite), present and preterite tenses for “radical changing” verbs in present and preterite,  saber vs. conocer,  demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, and  useful common expressions and new vocabulary.   You will get introduced to  direct object pronouns vs. indirect object pronounsthe “command” form ( familiar and formal), the imperfect tense,  difference (and lots of practice)  between the imperfect and the preterite tense. During this class you will have the opportunity to practice using  radical changing verbs, past participles, impersonal verbs, deber and debería,  command forms, imperfect tense, and the present perfect.

You will have the opportunity to practice conversation with other students at the same level. You will improve your knowledge of  the “command” form ( familiar and formal), the imperfect tense, preterite tense, and difference between  por and para.   This class will allow you to solidify your knowledge before you move on to “Intermediate 2” level.

Intermediate 2

This class is designed for those who have already taken  our  “Intermediate 1” 30-hour session (see explanation above) or those who already know that information. This is a 30-hours class that meets once/week for 2 hours. During this class you will continue practicing conversation at an intermediate speed.   At this level you should be able to carry on a conversation at a medium speed (using regular, irregular, reflexive, and stem changing verbs.) This class is conducted almost 100% in Spanish with the occasional needed explanation in English. During this class you will learn the subjunctive mood, The present subjunctive, the imperfect subjuntive,  the subjunctive with verbs of emotion, doubt, disbelief and denial and with conjunctions, past participles used as adjectives. You will practice using the present perfect, the past perfect, the present perfect subjunctive, the past subjunctive, the conditional, the past perfect subjunctive, the imperfect vs. the preterite.  You will “fill any gaps” you have in your Spanish.  At this level, each session will cover different conversation topics and any grammar topics will be explained as they come up during conversation in class.  At this level we are reinforcing grammar learned in the previous sessions, and general conversation topics will vary each session.

Since each Intermediate 2 class will cover different conversation topics, many students take a few sessions at this level before they move to the “advanced level”. You will have the opportunity to practice conversation with other students at the same level. After you take a minimum of 2 Intemdeiate 2 sessions  you will be ready to move to “Advanced” Level

 Advanced

This class is designed for those who have taken a minimum of 2 “Intermediate 2 level” sessions and can carry on a  conversation with few mistakes.   This class is conducted 100% in Spanish. You may still have some “shaky” areas where you need to improve but at this level you can carry on a conversation in Spanish at a medium to normal speed.  Each advanced level will concentrate on conversation with activities planned for each class. If you still have questions about grammar topics you must take either Intermediate 1 or 2. At this level you will be “sharpening” your conversation and listening skills.
